We go into the mind of a young woman as she struggles to find the words when asked about her origins. This experimental animated short film is inspired by my personal experience being Cuban, based on an original poem.

Thesis for California College of the Arts’ Animation program.

This throne prop, as seen in the opening sequence of the film, was simplified in design and later modeled in polymer clay. Nodding to live-action/animation scenes and hybrid stop-motion treatments from 2000s films and cartoons, I photographed the prop in Celia Cruz’s wig, digitally painted and composited the layout to match lighting and mood, and later added the character.

For this film I wanted a very fluid and diverse array of media to work with as it felt the best way to uphold the experimental nature of my writing and animation. I used found images, paper crafts to create puppets and backgrounds, ink, acrylic, colored pencil, as well as digital media to mimic stop-motion and paper cut animation techniques.
